Town Lots and Rural Shops

Epoxy flooring in Maple Hill covers two kinds of jobs. Inside town, it is the attached garage on a house lot. Outside town, in some of the most thinly settled country near Topeka, it is a shop, machine shed or pole barn floor. Wabaunsee County had about 8.7 people per square mile at the 2020 census, and Maple Hill is one of its few clustered towns. A lot of the concrete we coat in this area belongs to working buildings.

Shop and barn floors first

A shop slab in rural Wabaunsee County sees tractors, trucks, mowers, welders and grease. Bare concrete there soaks up hydraulic fluid and diesel and turns dark and slick. Our commercial and shop floor epoxy is built for that:

  • Diamond grinding to open the surface and remove old stains where possible
  • Crack and joint repair so equipment rolls without catching
  • A thick epoxy base that handles heavy wheels and dropped parts
  • An optional chemical-resistant topcoat for fuel, oil and cleaners
  • Texture in the final coat for footing where water and grease collect

We ask what you park and what you work on before we price the build. A shop that houses a combine needs a different spec than one used for small engines.

Young households in town

Maple Hill is a young town. Its median age was 30.2 at the 2020 census, and the population grew from 469 in 2000 to 620 in 2010 and 631 in 2020. That growth brought newer homes alongside older ones. Newer slabs are smooth and dense from the finishing trowel, so a coating cannot grip them until they are ground. Older ones carry wear, cracks and stains. Either way, grinding is the first step. For family garages we recommend flake floors with a clear topcoat because they hide dirt and stay grippy.

A railroad town history

The Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway built its main line from Topeka through Maple Hill to Herington in 1887. That line later passed to the Rock Island, then to other railroads, and today it is part of Union Pacific. Locals still call it the Rock Island. The town's name comes from a grove of maple trees on a rise. It was founded around 1882 and incorporated in 1908.

Cold shops and cure times

Many shops and barns around Maple Hill are unheated. Epoxy and polyaspartic both need the slab and air to stay warm enough to cure, so most unheated shop jobs are scheduled from spring through fall. If you have a heated shop, we can often work through the cold months. On the day of the install we check slab temperature and dew point and will move the date before we install on a cold or sweating floor.

Maple Hill Questions

Can you coat a pole barn slab that has years of oil and hydraulic fluid in it?

Often, yes. We grind the surface, remove what we can and treat deep oil spots so the coating bonds. Some old slabs are too saturated in spots, and we will tell you where before you commit.

Do you travel out to farm shops outside Maple Hill?

Yes. We cover rural Wabaunsee County ground around Maple Hill. We need power for the grinder and vacuums, and we will ask about access for equipment when you book.

Is epoxy too slippery for a shop floor?

Smooth epoxy can be slick when wet or greasy. For shops we add grit or flake to the final coat so you have footing around work benches and wash areas.
